About Skin Aging

What happens as we age?

The cellular membranes of the skin are composed of phospholipids and proteins, which act as a defense mechanism to the aggressions of the environment. These membranes are attacked by free radicals which cause hardening of the membrane and eventually lead to aging. As we age the defense mechanisms become slower and take longer to act, the skin becomes wrinkled, less flexible and looses firmness. The theory of free radicals is the one that has earned importance as the primary cause of the aging, and characterized by the accumulation of lesions of the cell during the individual's life.

The skin also gradually loses its ability to retain water, and, as a result, becomes drier, thinner, and looser which leads to an older appearance of the skin.

Other causes

Aging is not the only cause of skin-aging. Other factors that contribute to aging are smoking, exposure to the sun, lack of exercise and pollution all add to increased formation of wrinkles and fine lines. {Read From Original Source....}
